Characteristics of handmade products

The products presented in this online shop are all handmade, piece by piece. Therefore, the final productsmay have someunique characteristics that depend on the different raw materials, such as clay, glazes, or the manufacturing process.

Features such as variation in texture or colour are not considered defects or flaws, but are inherent to the handcrafted production of different and unique pieces.

Furthermore, the photographs and descriptions of the products are not contractual; they are illustrative and informative, and do not commit Velasco Gascon pottery.

We do our best to ensure that the products and photographs are faithful to the original models, but sometimes variations in colour and tone are inevitable, depending on the technical conditions when the images are captured and the screens of the device used by the customer.

Our Pottery

Our handcrafted pottery works the clay by hand and on the lathe to produce traditional, life-long and unique pieces of pottery.

The Velasco Gascon Pottery is an artisan's workshop that inherits the tradition of a family business of several generations in a rural area of Valladolid, Spain, where the clay has been worked for many years. All the pieces that come out of the oven follow the same simple and slow production steps that this millenary trade has followed: turning, drying, glazing and firing. The pottery preserves the essence of a work made with soil, air, fire and water, to the measure of man, to the slow passage of time and with the wisdom that our hands have learned.

Our workshop and shop are in a little village, Arrabal de Portillo, in Valladolid, Spain. Valladolid, the capital of Castilla y León, located 200 km north of Madrid, is linked to some of the most important figures in Spanish history.

Portillo, a town with centuries of pottery tradition

Portillo, in Valladolid, is a town with a long pottery tradition to the extent that,in the mid-20th century,it had more than 50 artisan workshops and stood out as a centre of artisan production in the clay market in northern Spain.

For decades it has been home to clay professionals, since the potters had both the raw material, clay - in the outskirts of the town - and the fuel for their workshops - in the land of pine trees to which this Spanish town of Castile and Leon belongs.

Since the 18th century, Portillo has maintained its importance as a pottery centre in Spain, both for the number of workshops and for the quality of its products. The key period of this pottery industry took place in the 1950s, when there were around 60 potters and 30 workshops in an urban area with no more than 2,000 inhabitants.

Now there are only 8 workshops left that maintain the trade and tradition of clay, which traditionally includes the following steps: kneading, to make the clay more ductile; turning, lifting and moulding the piece with the lathe and hands; drying, so that the clay loses water; caring for the piece, to correct small defects; glazing, applying the glaze to the piece; shearing, placing the pieces in the oven; baking, baking up to 1.000º centigrade for 10 hours and take the pieces out of the oven.
